History Of The Place
Hanauma Bay has a lot of history concerning its pristine marine ecosystem. The place became a secured marine life conservation area and underwater park in 1967. Soon, in 1990, genuine efforts were made to regain its overlooked and over-visited reefs.
Finally, when the state and County of Honolulu took over the place, they started acting towards a common goal, which was to introduce public access, a marine education center, and reef restoration.
Although with public access, they still had some rules that locals and non residents both had to follow. This was done basically to protect the life underwater.
One of the most common and important rules was not feeding the fish in any condition. They also included educational programming about local aquatic life and reef ecosystems, which currently can be found on display at the Visitor Center.
